Newly Natural: Brea Jones, Senior at Lamar High School - Houston, TX
“This is Brea. I like it. It’s pretty. :)”
1. What made you decide to go natural?
They’re 2 reasons why I chose to go natural. For one, I’m in band, and during marching season, getting it permed is a big waste because all I do is go to marching practice and sweat, so the perm is a waste of money. Also, I wanted to be different from everyone at school and stray away from perms.
2. How do you think natural hair is perceived in high school?
Most of the girls at my school would all say “Your hair is nappy.” Or “You’re baldheaded”. They all feel the need to wear weave because they want to have long flowing hair like the Caucasian girls at school, and mostly to get the attention of guys who for some reason, finds wearing excessive weave attractive apparently.
3. Explain your big chop experience.
My Beautician asked me 3 times if I wanted to cut my hair, and each time, I agreed yes confidently. She grabbed a chunk of my hair, and it felt like she just snipped and ripped that part of my hair off. It shocked me at first when she did it, but afterwards, I was like “Well, it’s no turning back now.” It wasn’t that bad in my opinion.
4. What advice do you have for anyone that’s thinking about going natural?
I would say go for it! You learn so much about your hair and what it can do while you’re natural. And also, you can do waaaaaaay more tricks and things to your hair. If you can rock a short boy’s haircut, you should be able to wear, do, and try anything that you want with confidence.
